On the coast, dividing at Monterey Bay gives S. Calif. some nice wildland mountains, along with the southern Sierra Nevada. Northern California's southern limit defined by watershed of the Merced River in the Central Valley, includes Mono County because it IS north and Santa Cruz County on coast.
